Making a Tooled Leather Duck Strap
Duck hunting is very popular. In this class students will learn to make a high end, tooled, leather duck strap. These make great items to sell or give as gifts for duck hunters.
Students should bring tooling stone, cutting board/ mat, scalpel with #11 blades, floral carving tools of small to medium size (camouflages, pear shaders, bevelers, veiners (normal and shell), mulesfoot, background) as well as figure bevelers and pointed bevelers, matting type background tools, mallet/ maul, spray bottle, stylus, modeling spoon, swivel knife, strop, stitching chisels/ pricking irons, a small stitching pony or something to hold your work while hand sewing, note taking materials.
About Erik:
I began leather work in 2014 out of a love to work with my hands and a fascination from seeing people transform a blank piece of leather into a tactile work of art. As my skills grew, so did my love for the craft, and as my love to create grew, I felt a great desire to pass on my knowledge and skill to others. I began teaching leatherworking merit badges for Scouts, and in 2024, I began teaching courses in leatherworking at my alma mater, McNeese State University with my Western Floral Carving 101 course. Since that time, I have offered more courses at the university, and I have continually expanded teaching and promoting leatherworking in my hometown of Sulphur, Louisiana, and across the country.
